1. Evicted, They Moved Into the Studio: Back home from Lollapalooza in 1993, the band found themselves evicted for missing rent and moved into Seattle's London Bridge Studio. They walked in with no songs written, finished the EP in seven days, and it became the first EP ever to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
2. Named After a Third-Grade Science Project: Jerry Cantrell once kept two jars of flies for a school experiment, overfeeding one jar and underfeeding the other. The overfed flies multiplied and died from overcrowding, while the underfed ones survived the whole year.
3. Layne Banned Pro Tools: Staley insisted no Pro Tools be used, so everything went to tape on a Neve console, mostly in one or two takes. Cantrell sang lead on "Don't Follow," and drummer Sean Kinney's side-stick experiment became the opening groove of "No Excuses."
