Cultural Facts:
- Film Lore: Bernstein’s jaunty main march became one of the most recognizable themes in war-film history, deliberately giving the POW escape story a sense of determination and adventure rather than scoring it only as tragedy.
- Personal Struggle: During the McCarthy era, Bernstein was effectively graylisted in Hollywood because of his political associations, forcing him into years of lower-budget film work before major projects restored his career.
- Career Turning: Director John Sturges had previously hired Bernstein for The Magnificent Seven, and their successful collaboration led directly to The Great Escape, helping establish Bernstein as one of Hollywood’s defining action-film composers.
