Mastodon – Leviathan (Rare! (Staff Pick!)
@POWERPLANTRECORDS | PowerPlantRecords.com | Leave a positive Google review!
Title: Mastodon - Leviathan
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 2004, Progressive Metal, Sludge Metal Stoner Metal, Atlanta, Georgia 10/26
Condition: New (BC) | Members: Mastodon (N/A) | Producer: Matt Bayles
Cultural Facts:
- Chance Meeting: Mastodon essentially came together after its future members crossed paths at a High on Fire show in Atlanta. Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor had recently relocated, met Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds, and within weeks the musicians who barely knew one another were building a band together.
- The White Whale: Leviathan is built around Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, with Captain Ahab's obsession becoming a metaphor for chasing something so relentlessly that it begins destroying you. The idea was bizarre enough for a metal record that the band knew making an entire concept album about a 19th-century novel was a genuine gamble.
- Captain Ahab Himself: Neil Fallon of Clutch appears on “Blood and Thunder,” effectively stepping into the role of Captain Ahab for one of Mastodon's defining songs. A friend from another heavy underground band ended up delivering the album's most famous command: “White whale, holy grail.”

The title and electric chair theme were inspired by a Stephen King novel the band passed around in their tour van. Recorded in Copenhagen, reflecting Metallica’s early pattern of working far from home and outside the Hollywood/LA industry orbit. 1/20/25KG 3/2...
