Cultural Facts:
- Prison Lore: Lead Belly was serving time at Angola Prison when folklorists John and Alan Lomax encountered him in 1933 while collecting songs for the Library of Congress, beginning the relationship that helped bring his music to a national audience.
- Instrument Story: His booming 12-string Stella guitar became a signature partly because its extra volume could cut through noisy bars and dance halls, and his percussive playing often tried to imitate the power of barrelhouse piano.
- Legacy: This collection includes songs such as “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?,” “Midnight Special,” “Gallows Pole,” and “Goodnight Irene,” material later reinterpreted by artists ranging from Nirvana and Led Zeppelin to Creedence Clearwater Revival.
