Cultural Facts:
-
A DJ Helped Create the Name: The group was originally billed simply as The Imperials. New York DJ Alan Freed started introducing lead singer Anthony Gourdine as “Little Anthony,” and the nickname stuck so completely that it became part of the group's permanent name.
-
They Broke Up, Then Came Back Bigger: After their early doo-wop success faded, Anthony left the group in 1961 and the Imperials effectively dissolved for more than two years. They reunited in 1964 and immediately entered one of their strongest periods with songs like “I'm on the Outside (Looking In),” “Goin' Out of My Head” and “Hurt So Bad.”
-
“Tears on My Pillow” Was Their First Shot: Their first major single under the Imperials name, “Tears on My Pillow,” became a million-seller and reached the Top 10 in 1958. It turned a young Brooklyn vocal group into national stars almost immediately.
