Cultural Facts:

  1. Recording Story: Much of The Nubians Of Plutonia was recorded in Chicago during 1958 and 1959, capturing the Arkestra as Sun Ra was developing his strange mixture of swing, percussion, electronics, and outer-space mythology.
  2. Personal Struggle: Born Herman Blount in segregated Alabama, Sun Ra rejected the identity imposed on him by American racial society and eventually adopted the name and cosmic persona Sun Ra as part of a radical reinvention of himself.
  3. Scene Ecology: Sun Ra released the music through his own Saturn label, giving the Arkestra unusual independence at a time when Black experimental musicians had few conventional industry outlets.
