Cultural Facts:

1. Recorded at Breakneck Speed: After the success of Murmur, R.E.M. deliberately made Reckoning quickly, recording most of it at Reflection Sound in Charlotte, North Carolina in roughly two weeks. The band wanted to preserve the feel of playing together instead of endlessly polishing every detail.

2. A Song About a Real Flood: “So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)” was inspired in part by severe flooding in Georgia and the helpless feeling of being unable to reach people by phone. Michael Stipe turned that disconnected, anxious mood into one of the band's earliest signature songs.

3. Athens Before the World Caught On: R.E.M. came out of the same Athens scene that produced the B-52's and Pylon, where cheap rent, art-school culture and tiny clubs made it possible for strange young bands to survive. By Reckoning, R.E.M. were already touring relentlessly, but they still carried the DIY habits of that tightly connected local community.
