Cultural Facts:
Bay Area Blues Before the Boom: McCracklin moved west and became a fixture of Oakland's postwar blues scene, forming the Blues Blasters and recording for a long string of small labels before mainstream success arrived. Much of My Rockin' Soul draws from recordings made during those hard-traveling early years.
He Started His Own Label: After years of bouncing between record companies, McCracklin founded Art-Tone Records in Oakland. His own label released “Just Got to Know,” which became a major R&B hit and proved he could succeed without waiting for a bigger company to take a chance on him.
From Songwriter to Club Owner: McCracklin co-wrote “Tramp,” later made famous by Lowell Fulson and the Otis Redding/Carla Thomas duet. In the early 1970s he also ran Oakland's Continental Club, booking artists including T-Bone Walker, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner and Etta James.
