Cultural Facts:

  1. Childhood Loss: Billie Joe Armstrong was only 10 years old when his father Andrew died of esophageal cancer. His father had been a jazz drummer and truck driver who encouraged Billie's music from childhood. Decades later, Billie Joe used that loss as the emotional foundation for “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” turning something he had carried since elementary school into one of Green Day's most personal songs.

  2. Childhood Friends: Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt met when they were about 10 years old in their school cafeteria and bonded over music. By 14 they had formed Sweet Children, the band that became Green Day. Before anyone was famous, Mike even lived for a period with Billie Joe's family, making their partnership closer to brothers growing up together than musicians who simply answered an ad.

  3. Before Dookie: This 1993 live recording captures Green Day just before their lives completely changed. They had spent years touring the underground circuit in a converted Bookmobile, sleeping on floors and building an audience through places like 924 Gilman Street. When they signed to Reprise and Dookie exploded, parts of the scene that raised them branded them sellouts, and Green Day were no longer welcome at Gilman for years.
