Cultural Facts:

1. Sinatra With a String Quartet: Close To You was built around the Hollywood String Quartet rather than a conventional big band. Nelson Riddle arranged the songs so Sinatra could sing against a small chamber ensemble, giving the record one of the most intimate settings of his Capitol years.
2. Riddle Helped Reinvent Him: Sinatra's partnership with arranger Nelson Riddle became central to his 1950s comeback. Riddle understood how to leave space around Sinatra's phrasing, helping transform him from a former teen idol into a sophisticated album artist.
3. A Career Nearly Written Off: Only a few years before this record, Sinatra's career had collapsed badly enough that major labels and Hollywood studios had largely lost interest. His Oscar-winning performance in From Here to Eternity and his new Capitol recordings rebuilt his reputation, making albums like Close To You part of one of pop music's most dramatic comebacks.
