1. Basement Recording: Smith recorded Roman Candle largely by himself on a four-track cassette machine in the basement of girlfriend and manager JJ Gonson’s Portland house, using a cheap microphone placed close enough to capture both his voice and fingers on the guitar.

2. Accidental Album: Smith originally thought of the recordings as demos and hoped a label might choose a song for a 7-inch single. Cavity Search Records heard the cassette and instead released the recordings essentially unchanged as his debut album.

3. Early Song Lore: “Condor Ave” dated back to Smith’s teenage songwriting years, showing that material from his obscure pre-Heatmiser home-recording days was still resurfacing when he began his solo career.
