Cultural Facts:

  1. How “Cleanhead” Got His Name: Vinson's famous nickname came after he tried using a lye-based hair straightener and accidentally destroyed his hair. He shaved his head afterward, liked the look, and “Cleanhead” became his lifelong stage identity.
  2. Big Bill Broonzy Taught Him to Shout: Before leading his own band, Vinson toured with Milton Larkin's orchestra alongside future greats T-Bone Walker and Arnett Cobb. He later credited blues legend Big Bill Broonzy with teaching him how to properly “shout” the blues.
  3. A Young Clark Terry Was in the Band: Vinson's April 1947 St. Louis recording session featured a 26-year-old Clark Terry on trumpet, years before Terry became a celebrated member of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras and one of jazz's most respected educators.
