Cultural Facts:

1. Carlos Became “Devadip”: The album was originally credited to Devadip Carlos Santana, using the spiritual name given to him by guru Sri Chinmoy. Santana's intense involvement with Chinmoy during this period shaped both the album's music and its artwork.
2. Playing With Miles Davis Royalty: Santana recorded with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, four musicians closely associated with Miles Davis' legendary 1960s groups. Santana later admitted he was “scared to death” playing with musicians he considered among the best on Earth.
3. The Guru Painted the Cover: Sri Chinmoy created the album's front-cover artwork, while celebrated Japanese psychedelic artist Tadanori Yokoo contributed the interior art. The packaging made Santana's spiritual world as visible as the jazz-fusion direction of the music.
