Title: Billy Squier - Signs of Life
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1984, Hard Rock, AOR, Pop Rock
Matrix #: SJ-512361
Condition: VG+++ (LM) | Members: Billy S (50' - ) | Producer: Jim Steinman, Billy Squier
Cultural Facts:

1. The Video That Haunted His Career: “Rock Me Tonite” was a major hit, but its flamboyant Kenny Ortega-directed video became infamous after fans reacted badly to Squier dancing around a bedroom in pastel clothes. Squier later said the video badly damaged the hard-rock image he had spent years building and marked a turning point in his career.
2. Jim Steinman Behind the Board: Squier brought in Jim Steinman, the theatrical songwriter and producer behind Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell, for Signs of Life. The pairing pushed Squier's already huge arena-rock sound toward even more dramatic keyboards, layered vocals and oversized production.
3. Years Before the Breakthrough: Squier had spent much of the 1970s grinding through bands including Piper before becoming a successful solo artist. Piper even opened major shows for Kiss, but widespread fame didn't arrive until Squier was in his thirties, making his early-'80s explosion the payoff to more than a decade of false starts.
