Matrix #: SD8227

Cultural Facts:

1. Raised Inside the Church: Aretha grew up singing at Detroit's New Bethel Baptist Church, where her father, Rev. C. L. Franklin, was a nationally known preacher. Their home regularly hosted major figures from gospel, civil rights and music, putting Aretha around extraordinary voices and ideas long before she became famous.
2. Civil Rights Was Personal: Aretha's family had close ties to Martin Luther King Jr., and she performed at civil-rights events while still young. After King's assassination in 1968, she sang at his memorial service, making her connection to the movement far more personal than a later celebrity endorsement.
3. Atlantic Changed Everything: After years at Columbia, Aretha moved to Atlantic Records and began working with producer Jerry Wexler. Sessions in Muscle Shoals and New York finally put her piano, gospel phrasing and emotional force at the center of the arrangements, producing the run of hits collected on Aretha's Gold.
