1. Childhood Visions: Neige has said Alcest grew from strange experiences he had as a child, when he felt he had glimpsed a distant, luminous world populated by beings unlike anything around him. He later built Alcest around trying to recreate the feeling of those memories, which is where the title Souvenirs d’un autre monde, “Memories from Another World,” comes from.

2. One-Man World: On this debut, Neige handled essentially the entire musical world himself rather than working like a conventional band. Alcest would later become a fuller group, but this record is remarkably close to one young musician privately constructing the place he had been imagining since childhood.

3. Total Reinvention: Alcest actually began years earlier as a much harsher black-metal project. Instead of staying inside that scene, Neige gradually abandoned aggression as the main purpose and followed the stranger, more personal idea in his head, helping accidentally create the style eventually called blackgaze.
