Cultural Facts:
-
Almost Normal Jobs: When AIR was taking shape, Nicolas Godin was on the verge of becoming an architect while Jean-Benoît Dunckel was teaching physics and had a baby. Dunckel later remembered that abandoning stable work for music felt like a genuine gamble because neither man knew AIR would last.
-
Architecture Started AIR: Godin's first AIR recording was “Modulor Mix,” a tribute to architect Le Corbusier's Modulor system, made on a Portastudio while Godin was still studying architecture. Its small success convinced him to bring Dunckel into the project, meaning one of France's most famous electronic groups partly grew out of an architecture student's homemade experiment.
-
Chance Couch Meeting: American singer Beth Hirsch met Nicolas almost accidentally while visiting another producer's apartment in Montmartre. AIR invited the little-known folk singer to work with them, and her voice became central to “All I Need” and “You Make It Easy,” two of Moon Safari's most memorable songs.
