Title: The Doobie Brothers - Takin' It To The Streets
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1976, Blue-Eyed Soul, Soft Rock, San Jose, California 10/26
Matrix #: N/A
Condition: VG+ (LM) | Members: The Doobie Brothers (N/A) | Producer: Ted Templeman
Cultural Facts:
- Michael McDonald Changed the Band Almost Overnight: Jeff "Skunk" Baxter recommended his former Steely Dan bandmate Michael McDonald when Tom Johnston's health forced him off the road. The Doobies initially needed a keyboardist and singer, then discovered McDonald had brought songs strong enough to reshape the entire band.
- The Title Track Was the Surprise Demo: When McDonald played the group his demo of “Takin' It to the Streets,” even the band hadn't realized how strong a songwriter their new member was. It became the album's title track and McDonald's first major lead-vocal showcase with the Doobies.
- A Song for Their Missing Bandmate: Bassist Tiran Porter wrote and sang “For Someone Special” for Tom Johnston while Johnston was sidelined by serious stomach problems. That gives the album a surprisingly personal moment inside what was otherwise one of the biggest stylistic reinventions of the band's career.
