Title: Don Henley - Building The Perfect Beast
Year/Genre/Sub-Genre/City: 1984, Pop Rock, Synth-Pop, AOR, Linden, Texas 9/26
Matrix #: GHS 24026
Condition: EX (LM) | Members: Don H (47' - ) | Producer: Don Henley, Danny Kortchmar, Greg Ladanyi, Mike Campbell
Cultural Facts:
- Tom Petty Passed on the Hit: Mike Campbell wrote the music that became “The Boys of Summer” and first offered it to Tom Petty. Petty passed on the track, so Campbell brought it to Henley, who wrote the lyrics and turned the rejected instrumental into one of the defining songs of his solo career.
- From Small-Town Texas to the Eagles: Henley grew up in tiny Linden, Texas, and initially studied English in college before returning home when his father became ill. His early band Shiloh eventually caught the attention of Kenny Rogers, who helped bring them to Los Angeles and produce their album, putting Henley on the path that led to the Eagles.
- Rebuilding After the Eagles: Building The Perfect Beast arrived only a few years after the Eagles' bitter breakup. Instead of recreating their country-rock sound, Henley surrounded himself with synthesizers, drum machines and collaborators like Danny Kortchmar and Mike Campbell, deliberately constructing a new identity rather than living off his former band's formula.
