  1. Personal Struggle Gaye came into this still carrying the emotional wreckage left by Tammi Terrell’s death and had sworn off female duet albums for a time.
  2. Studio Lore Ross was pregnant and the sessions got difficult enough that Motown ended up recording much of the album separately and blending the vocals later.
  3. Media Narrative Motown billed Ross first, pushed it hard, and got a hit, but in the U.S. the album landed more as a solid success than the giant event they expected.
