Cultural Facts:
- Label Rejection: Columbia Records famously declined to release Various Positions in the United States, even though it contained “Hallelujah,” a song that would eventually become one of Cohen’s most celebrated compositions.
- Songwriting Lore: Cohen worked obsessively on “Hallelujah,” reportedly filling notebooks with dozens of discarded verses before arriving at the version recorded for the album.
- Dark Inspiration: “Dance Me to the End of Love” was partly inspired by accounts of string musicians forced to perform beside crematoria in Nazi concentration camps, turning what sounds like a romantic song into something far darker about love in the presence of death.
