Cultural Facts:
- Release History: Very Young And Early Songs collects recordings from Stevens’ first Deram period, preserving the ornate pop sound he made before the stripped-down singer-songwriter style of Tea for the Tillerman.
- Personal Struggle: Stevens contracted tuberculosis in 1969 and spent months hospitalized and recovering, a frightening illness that pushed him to reconsider his life, spirituality, and musical direction.
- Career Turning: These early recordings document the teenage songwriter before his 1970 reinvention, when songs such as “Matthew and Son” had already made him a British pop star but left him dissatisfied with the direction of his career.
