Description:
By 1981, The Police had moved from reggae-inflected post-punk into a more ambitious palette of synths and horns. Ghost In The Machine was largely tracked in Montserrat’s AIR Studios over late 1980, and draws conceptual inspiration from Arthur Koestler’s The Ghost in the Machine — hence its recurring tension between spirit and mechanism. Sting’s lyrics about alienation and mass media (“Invisible Sun,” “Spirits in the Material World”) reflect Cold War anxieties and post-industrial unease. As a turning-point LP in their catalog, it shows the band stretching beyond the trio template and foreshadows their move toward maximalism on Synchronicity.
