Released in 1967 on Mainstream Records, this debut introduced San Francisco’s Big Brother & The Holding Company just as the Haight-Ashbury scene was exploding nationally. The group’s raw, guitar-driven sound was sharpened by the addition of Janis Joplin, whose commanding voice quickly distinguished them from other Bay Area acts. Recorded before their famed Monterey Pop Festival performance, the album captures the band in transition from a local psychedelic draw to national recognition. Its production reflected Mainstream’s practice of quickly signing and issuing records from emerging underground groups, making early pressings of this LP an artifact of the fast-moving late-’60s countercultural music economy.
