Cultural Facts:

  1. Almost Became a Pilot: Aguilar's uncle offered to pay for him to study aviation in New York, but Antonio abandoned that path after winning a singing scholarship. His uncle withdrew the financial support when he learned Antonio had chosen music instead, forcing the future star to make his own way.
  2. Booed Into Becoming a Charro: Aguilar originally tried to build his career singing boleros. After a rough reception in Puerto Rico, legendary songwriter Rafael Hernández encouraged him to sing traditional Mexican rancheras instead. That advice helped transform him into “El Charro de México.”
  3. He Took the Rodeo on Tour: Aguilar combined ranchera concerts with horses, bull riders, mariachi and Mexican charrería, eventually bringing his entire family into the production. American promoters initially doubted a Mexican equestrian show could draw large crowds, but Aguilar went on to fill venues including Madison Square Garden.
